This position requires neurology/neuroscience expertise, and a Master’s
Degree, along with comprehensive experience in the clinical specialty.
Previous and comprehensive neuroscience experience is required for
consideration. The normative rotating shifts associated with such a position
are occasionally required. For instance, rotating nights, off-shift and weekend
responsibility for educational reasons. Otherwise, this is mainly a days
position, with 5-day coverage required. This is a 24/7 operation.
This is a neurosciences ICU and Intermediate care unit. Most of the nurses that
transitioned here were from the SICU for the ICU patients and for IC, from Med
/surg units. Essentially all of the neuro patients that were throughout the
hospital that were in the ICUs and med/surg units were moved to this brand
new unit. CNS preferred. At least 3-5 years of relevant experience required.
Masters in Nursing required. Current Massachusetts Nursing License required
or eligible. There is a hefty education component to CNS roles at this facility.
Educator experience is paramount.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for the development of
nursing staff as well as for impacting patient outcomes through consultation on
patient care issues. The CNS’s responsibilities encompass the following
broad areas of practice: clinical practice, collaboration/consultation, staff
development, leadership and evidence based practice. The Clinical Nurse
Specialist is able to translate research findings and other evidence for other
healthcare professionals to improve the care of patients. CNS updates and
improves the norms and standards of nursing practice, while providing
leadership, knowledge, skills, and behavior-modeling that influence nursing
practice. The CNS also influences the development of evidence-based
policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as best practice models and
guidelines. The CNS assesses knowledge, skills, and instruments when
available. The CNS monitors specialty practice, using tools and outcomes,
and determines aspects of nursing practice that require changes,
improvement, or maintenance based on available evidence. The CNS must be
able to plan strategies to overcome barriers and facilitate changes in nursing
practice, including the implementation of new programs, products, and
devices. The CNS analyzes the clinical, human resources, and fiscal
implications of implementing programs, products, and devices into nursing
practice. The CNS plans educational programs that target the needs of staff to
improve nursing practice and clinical outcomes.
